Volumetric fog/clouds on mobiles?

Postby lcocea » 2016-01-02 16:22

Hi all, I am looking at options for creating volumetric fog/clouds in ShiVa on more recent (2014-2015) mobile devices. Billboards are not an option. A particle system seems like a good starting point and I was wondering if anybody has already tried this and what kind of impact a "realistic" fog/cloud particle system has on performance.

I'm not sure how I would do it with particles, but that may be a good way?

But for 1DC you could use additive blended quads, opacity off. With like 3 layers of complex tileable whispy fog clouds I reckon something good could be done.

ShiVas volumetric scene fog works really well on modern phones. I'm using it right now on my latest game (to reduce popin harshness), but it also really adds to a scenes ambience and accentuates the 3D I think. Yay fog!

This planet runs stereo 60Hz on modern phones, uses fog for the planet surface and single moving additive blended trunctated cone section for the halo effect: https://twitter.com/SiliconDroid/status ... 9313944577

yes, you can make particle clouds/nebulae for space games using particle systems, where each particle is animated. I tested it on an iPad Mini 1st gen, and it worked fine. The problem with these things is the massive alpha overdraw, so keep your particle count to a minimum and the particles at a reasonable size.

How did you make the space ship engine flares did you use particles?

the flare is a single quad which always faces the camera and periodically flickers, while the exhaust is a particle system.
