Has anyone been able to use Shiva with wine 1.2? So far I can't get past the splash page.

When will Shiva 2.0 be released? I've read elsewhere that it will have native support for Linux.

why not try virtual box (with guest additions for 3d hardware acceleration), as neib has described it.

2.0 is rumored to come later this year. there is no release date publicly available yet.

Ok, I tried it and was impressed (I never used VirtualBox before) and later a bit disappointed. First i was impressed because installation was very simple and worked without effort, and VirtualBox runs Windows XP very smoothly on my old machine (only 2GB RAM, GeForce 6600 -- time for an upgrade!).

ShiVa Editor also works very well -- at least to edit scenes and code and so on. User interface works perfectly as far as I could see (I didn't spend a long time on it), and with VirtualBox on seamless mode it was like being on a separate boot.

But -- and maybe I can fix this, I tried for a while and added Guest Additions and googled for a solution -- rendering is not perfect and running a game was a bit laggy (I enabled 2D and 3D acceleration and gave 128MB to the graphics card). The Car Game runs slowly and apparently there's no light in the scene. The 3DPaint game rendered perfectly but again, it was lagging with damn slow controls.

VirtualBox was a nice discovery and at least I can edit some scripts while I'm on Ubuntu, and maybe I can even make 3D rendering perform better. While I can't I'll use dual boot.

@moraes, I've got a quad core AMD system with 4GB of RAM and a 9800GT and it's running OK in that (and so it should!). I've dedicated 1 core to the virtual machine and assigned it 1GB of RAM.

Lighting and all the expected effects are working in the demos, and I haven't found anything yet that doesn't seem to work.

It can be a relatively laggy when the view mode is set to anything besides Runtime, but all the demos run smoothly though I do find the 3D paint is the slowest, except for The Hunt which manages about 5fps running in the IDE.

You've got the official nVidia drivers installed? Have you turned off Ubuntu's desktop effects?

Also, for anyone who wants to get a generic USB joypad to work with Virtual Box to test your games, you'll need to get the free PUEL version directly from Oracle as the open source version lacks the USB setting under Machine->Settings, which you have to use to let VBox know about USB devices.
