There isn't a best version of linux...
Different linux flavours are more or less suited to certain uses
For desktop-oriented uses my suggestion is ubuntu linux desktop: easy, popular and you'll find easily support on the net
they make a release every six months, but isn't a good idea to upgrade so often, sometime upgrading with the newest release leads to broken dependencies, then i suggest you to download and burn an iso with the chosen version (f.e. the 12.04.1 long term support version), try the live version (there is a menu when you boot from cd where you can choose to install or to try without installing) to test if it supports your hardware, then if all it's ok, you can install AND stick with it (only packages updates, no upgrades until you know how to resolve potential issues).
There are a lot of windowing systems: gnome, kde, xfce, when you are prompted with the login screen you can choose from all the windowing systems installed (you can install more of it)...try and make your choice (f.e. i use xfce and ubuntu classic), all the windowing systems are highly configurable
I wish you luck!

i suspect you're a bit biased ;) ...
Surely is the most indie-friendly on the cheap side...but it has got a lot of unexpressed potential, because is not popular among indie developers!!
It's difficult to find a game "made with Shiva" if you don't spend time in the shiva forum
Maybe a yearly indie shiva contest or a ludum dare game jam hosted by stonetrip (with an emphasis on completed games to publish on a store of choice) could incentivate indies to seriously try Shiva... but this is a bit OT (a lot actually :D )

the answer is: the author is a spambot. although posting such a question on a developer forum does have its funny aspects. instant nerdwar. topic closed.
